A study published in the Asian Journal of Andology in 2003 looked at the effects of performing acupuncture and moxibustion on males with semen abnormalities. Moxibustion is the burning of the herb “mugwort” on and/or around acupuncture points and is a traditional method of stimulating acupuncture points without needles. Nineteen participants, all with semen abnormalities including morphology and motility issues without apparent cause, were either submitted to the acupuncture and moxa group or to the control group which also consisted of acupuncture and moxa but at non-therapeutic points. Semen analyses were performed before and after the treatment course which consisted of twice a week for a total of 10 weeks. The results showed a significant increase in the percentage of normal-form sperm in the treatment group compared to the control group. [1]
