In a 2006 randomized, placebo controlled study in the coveted journal of Fertility and Sterility, researchers looked at the effects of using acupuncture to treat postmenopausal hot flashes or more specifically, nocturnal hot flashes (night time hot flashes).
Acupuncture was administered for 9 sessions over a 7 week period (2 sessions in the first week and once per week thereafter) by traditionally trained acupuncturists.
Upon completion of the study, “acupuncture significantly reduced the severity of nocturnal hot flashes compared to placebo.” It is also worthy to note that the acupuncture group also experienced fewer frequent hot flashes. Due to the effect that hot flashes can have on the quality of sleep, the study also concluded that acupuncture could enhance sleep.
