Chinese Herbal Medicine and Low Sperm Motility

A study published in the Jiangsu Chinese Medicine Journal (1993) treated thirty five cases of low sperm motility with the Chinese herbal medicine formula “Qiang Jing Jian” (a base formula with modifications depending on each individuals related symptoms)  The base formula was designed to supplement the “Kidneys” and fulfill the “Essence”, both vital in the production of healthy sperm from a traditional Chinese medicine point of view.    Treatment consisted of daily herbal medicine for 2 months.   Of the 35 cases with less than class II sperm motility, 27 increased to at least class II or III.  It was also significant to mention that those who had low semen pH levels prior to treatment (an indicator of semen health), rose to normal levels.  [1]

      Thanks for posting!

There are many Chinese herbs to treat poor sperm motility but which ones to take depend on your TCM diagnosis. For example, if you have been diagnosed with a “Kidney Yang deficiency”, incorporating Kidney Yang tonifying herbs is required. On the other hand, if your diagnosis is one of “Damp Heat”, then the herbs used would be completely different. What I am trying to illustrate is that there is no one herb, or single formula used to help with a diagnosis of poor sperm motility. See your qualified TCM practitioner to get properly diagnosed and to find out which herbs are right for you.

Moreover, nutrition and supplement advice are extremely important for sperm health. Consider seeing a nutritionist to find out which dietary changes and/or supplements will help you achieve your goals. Common supplements may include vitamin C, zinc, vitamin E and L-carnitine. See your nutritionist for proper dosages.

I hope this gets you started!

      Drew
