Hot Flashes and Soy Nut Consumption in the Diet

Many women have heard of soy being helpful during menopause but many do not know what it’s helpful for or more importantly, how much one should be consuming. In a 2007 crossover study in the Journal of Women’s Health, such a study was conducted on 60 healthy postmenopausal women.
For 8 weeks, half the women consumed a diet similar in energy (carbohydrates, fats and protein) while the other half had the exact same diet but substituted 25g of soy protein (soy nuts) throughout the day in place of non-soy protein. Compared to diet alone, those on the soy nuts experienced a 45% reduction in hot flashes as well as an overall improvement in the scores of their Menopause-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire concluding that consuming a native form of soy throughout the day improves a variety of menopausal symptoms in women.
