Luteal Phase Defect (LPD)

Luteal Phase Defects (LPD’s) are a common problem among those trying to conceive. However, some women may not even realize if this is occuring. Read on to find out more about LPD’s and how you can discover if it is happening with your cycle.
A luteal phase defect is very common for women dealing with infertility. It occurs when the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, the phase after ovulation, is too short or inadequate.
Ideally, the luteal phase should be around 12-14 days long but can vary depending on the woman’s cycle history. Causes of LPD’s can vary but most are thought to be a lack of progesterone. However, if low progesterone were the only cause, many cases of LPD would be remedied easily, and this is certainly not the case.
When it comes to TCM treating LPD’s, we often require that our clients complete basal body temperature (BBT) charts to help. BBT charts are used for more than identifying ovulation in the TCM clinic. Certain aspects of the chart help us determine which acupuncture points to use and which herbs to describe. BBT charts are a “must do” for all of my clients.
