Find out more about how this common cause of infertility starts and how it can be treated naturally with acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and nutrition.
PCOS, or polycystic ovary syndrome, is a hormonal condition characterized by irregular periods, lack of ovulation, obesity, excess androgens (masculinizing hormones) and acne. PCOS is a common cause of infertility in women of reproductive age.
Polycystic means “many cysts.” These cysts are immature follicles and are produced on the ovaries due to the hormonal irregularities. Instead of the ovary releasing an egg, the process is interrupted at an early stage, and the follicle remains with the ovary, eventually creating a number (poly) of cysts.
Treatment usually involves dietary therapy because PCOS is heavily connected to too much insulin in the blood. Medications are also used to help control blood sugar, which may play a role in alleviating symptoms. Current research on the natural supplement, D-chiro-inositol (DCI), is showing promise, and clinical trials are ongoing.
Studies on acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have shown promise in helping women with PCOS. Combined with proper nutrition and supplements, my TCM treatments can be very helpful especially for those trying to conceive.
