Not So Shocking? Physical Activity acts like a “Wonder Drug”

CBC’s radio program Fresh Air interviewed family physician Dr. Mike Evans about his discovery of a new wonder drug: walking.
With his colleagues at the Health Design Lab in the Department of Public Health at the University of Toronto, Dr. Evans analyzed data from a variety of studies on the effects of daily physical activity. He focused on relative risk-reductions for different populations who increased the amount of daily physical activity.
Dr. Evans’ team found that those who walked briskly every day experienced the following benefits:
- Reduced arthritis pain
- Reduced hip fractures
- Reduced progression of diabetes
- Decreased risk of heart attack and stroke
- Improved cognitive ability
- Improved quality of life
- Increased life expectancy
In one study, participants who took a placebo pill in combination with regular walking slowed the progression of Type II Diabetes better than those who took diabetes medication with little physical exercise.
Most importantly, side effects of this treatment are extremely low - basically none. Plus, it’s affordable! I encourage all of my clients to take this treatment and you should too!
