Traditional Chinese Medicine

TCM pic1 ServicesTraditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, is a primary form of medicine which has been around for thousands of years.  Although acupuncture may be the first thing that comes to mind when considering TCM treatment, there are many other effective therapies available to the TCM practitioner each with their own unique history and therapeutic application.  For more information on TCM, read Drew’s article “TCM in 1000 words or less”.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbal medicine is by far the most underestimated modality of TCM.  The herbs used in Chinese medicine were discovered from centuries of experience among the Chinese people with many outside influences from such places as India, Middle East and other Asian territories.   This wealth of knowledge has been compiled by physicians and then transferred from one generation of doctors to the next, with each generation passing on new and improved methods to use and apply the herbs.  Today, a huge pharmacopoeia of herbs ranging from plants, minerals and animals exists; over time, these herbs have proven their effectiveness when used with a traditional Chinese medical diagnosis.

Moxibustion

Moxa photo ServicesMoxibustion is an ancient form of treatment that uses the Mugwort leaf (“Ai Ye” in Chinese) at the site of different acupuncture points.   For treatment, the leaf is either formed into a cigar-like tool, or tiny mounds can be handmade to be burnt at or on the acupuncture points.  Typically this type of treatment is used for what we would call “cold” conditions.  The warming properties of the herb will disperse the cold relieving whatever the problems that the cold was causing (i.e. cold pain with arthritis that is worse with cold weather). It is often used with gynecological disorders, digestive complaints and pain.

Cupping

Cupping photo ServicesCupping is yet another method of TCM treatment which uses glass cups with suction on different parts of the body.  Typically used to treat muscle aches and pains, it is also used to relieve colds and flu and is also indicated for problems such as facial paralysis.  The suction is created with a small flame burning away the oxygen within the glass cup, creating a vacuum which is then quickly placed on the skin.  The suction gently pulls the skin into the glass cup, thereby enhancing muscle relaxation and increasing circulation.
