Luteal Phase Defects (LPD’s) are a common problem among those trying to conceive. However, some women may not even realize if this is occurring. Read on to find out more about LPD’s and how you can discover if it is happening with your cycle.
What is the Luteal Phase?
The Luteal Phase is the time during your menstrual cycle which occurs after ovulation. Ideally, the luteal phase should be around 12-14 days long but can differ depending on the woman’s cycle history.
What is a Luteal Phase Defect?
A luteal phase defect is when the time period after ovulation is too short or inadequate. This issue is very common for women dealing with infertility and is often associated with low levels of progesterone; a necessary hormone to maintain a healthy pregnancy.
What Causes a Luteal Phase Defect?
Causes of LPD’s can vary but most are thought to be a lack of progesterone. However, if low progesterone were the only cause, many cases of LPD would be remedied easily with progesterone supplementation, and this is certainly not the case.
Treating Luteal Phase Defects with TCM
When it comes to TCM treating LPD’s, we often require that our clients complete basal body temperature (BBT) charts to help. BBT charts are used for more than identifying ovulation in the TCM clinic. Certain aspects of the chart help us determine which acupuncture points to use and which herbs to prescribe. BBT charts are a “must do” for all of my clients.
