Male infertility is more common than most people think. One of the reasons why men have poor sperm is due to oxidative stress. Typical sources of oxidative stressors include the following:
- Diet – high amounts of animal protein, sugar, hydrogenated fats and not enough water increase your risk for oxidative stress. Also, not eating enough foods rich in antioxidants.
- Environment – air pollution, toxic work environments etc.
- Excessive stress – stress reduces our vitamin C stores, a potent antioxidant.
- Smoking – smoke oxidizes everything. This is most evident in the faces of chronic smokers who experience premature wrinkling and lack vitality.
- Alcohol – excessive alcohol consumption can increase oxidative stress.
Supplements and Sperm Health
In this large review of the Cochrane databases (the gold standard of research), researchers reviewed studies which included close to 3000 couples to study whether or not males who supplement with antioxidant therapy can increase their chances of conception. The study concluded the following:
“Men taking oral antioxidants had a statistically significant increase in live birth rate when compared with the men taking the control.”
If you are a male who is going through fertility treatments or perhaps you are a couple who have been diagnosed with unknown fertility, a simple way to help may be to maximize your antioxidants through proper supplementation.
