Minimize your exposure to pesticides by reducing the foods you eat from the 12 most pesticide laden fruits and vegetables, aka the “Dirty Dozen”.
To prevent people from consuming pesticides found in fruits and vegetables, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) recently released its “Dirty Dozen” list. This list is based on data from studies on nearly 96,000 tests for pesticide residue in produce. The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration collected this data from studies conducted between 2000 and 2008.
Research consistently shows that pesticides can be harmful to humans and to the environment. As a result, more and more people are buying organic foods in an attempt to minimize their exposure.
However, buying all organic is expensive! So how can you protect yourself and your family without breaking the bank? You have two options:
-
Minimize the amount of Dirty Dozen fruits and vegetables you consume.
-
When buying foods on the Dirty Dozen list, make sure to buy organic.
I strongly encourage you to buy organic when you can. If you find it too expensive to go organic for all of your fruits and vegetables, start with the Dirty Dozen list and buy organic for those items only.
Remember, buying locally grown foods from your farmer’s market is a great way to access nutrient-dense foods. It’s also an ideal way to become friendly with the people who actually grow your food.
