Common sites for endometriosis

Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterine lining is found elsewhere in the body.  Common sites include the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the pelvic sidewall.  Less common sites include the bladder, bowel, appendix and rectum.

Endometriosis Symptoms

Symptoms include pelvic pain during menstruation. This pain ranges from mild to severe to debilitating.

Diagnosing Endometriosis

A diagnosis of endometriosis is usually made with the help of a laparoscopy, which involves the insertion of a small video camera through the abdomen. At this stage, lesions can be identified and eventually removed.

Causes of Endometriosis

The cause of endometriosis is not well known, but it is hypothesized that estrogen plays a large role.  Without a known cause, treatment is difficult, and at this time there is no cure for endometriosis.

Acupuncture for Endometriosis

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have been used successfully for pain regulation and inflammation associated with endometriosis.   Dietary choices and supplements also play an important role in regulating the pain and inflammation. Be sure to seek the advice of a qualified practitioner.

The gold standard when it comes to reviewing studies is the Cochrane Database of Systemic Reviews.  Click on the following link to see a Cochrane review of the treatment of endometriosis with Chinese herbal medicine.  Click here…
